Homeland Security Chair Mark Green said now that the House GOP has passed its sweeping, party-line immigration bill, it will look toward possibly impeaching Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

The Tennessee Republican said he had a ‘five phase plan’ of accountability.

‘We’ll go phase by phase to look at things like laws that had been violated and ignored - you know, the human cost of the border crisis, the financial cost of the border crisis,’ he told DailyMail.com.‘We’re just going to put it all together and if it looks like it warrants an impeachment, we’ll hand it off to Jim Jordan,’ Green added, referring to the House Judiciary Committee chairman.

He said that his committee is currently planning hearings to lay out evidence.

The impeachment case would be the next frontier in one of Republicans’ central rallying cries of the 2022 midterms - which focused on the border together with crime and inflation.

A majority in the House would have to vote to impeach Mayorkas, then a trial would take place in the Senate and two thirds of upper chamber members would have to do the same for him to be removed from office.

Green made the comments just after the House passed H.R. 2, an immigration and border security bill that will be dead on arrival in the Senate. Still, House Republicans can tout a fulfilled campaign promise on the day that Title 42 is set to expire.

Without the pandemic-era public health rule that allows for immediate expulsions, border officials expect a deluge of migrants attempting to cross. It remains to be seen just how large the horde of border crossers waiting in Mexico to cross into the U.S. is, though some estimates say 150,000.

Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said he believes that figure is drastically overblown.

‘I’m tracking between 60,000 and 65,000,’ he said.
