A Tennessee congressman who served in Fort Bragg’s 82nd Airborne Division campaigned for Republican 9th District candidate Dan Bishop last week.
U.S. Rep. Mark Green appeared Aug. 19 with Bishop, who is a state senator from Charlotte, to talk about veterans and national security issues. Bishop is running against Democrat Dan McCready, a Marine Corps veteran.
Most of the group of about 20 people attending the event at The Logistics Company on Walsh Parkway in Fayetteville were veterans. Two were active duty soldiers who are about to leave the Army.
The discussion largely focused on issues with the Department of Veterans Affairs and problems veterans face after leaving the military.
Green, who is serving his first term in Congress, said after the event that he realizes that more needs to be done for troops transitioning out of the service.
Green was a company commander in the 82nd and later served as a flight surgeon in a Special Operations unit. He was part of the mission to capture Saddam Hussein and interviewed the former dictator for six hours on the night of his capture, according to a statement released by Bishop’s campaign.
Early voting in this special election started on Wednesday and Election Day is Sept. 10. This election is being held because the N.C. Board of Elections found evidence of fraud on the Republican side of the 2018 election, which was between McCready and Republican Mark Harris. The seat has been vacant since the beginning of January when incumbent Republican Robert Pittenger’s term expired.
This race also has Libertarian Jeff Scott and Green Party candidate Allen Smith.
